A Pitching Masterpiece!
The bats were slow to get rolling, but it didn't matter on Friday in Stratford.
A Zeleznik single and a McMillan triple were all that the Diamondbacks had to show for themselves through 3 full innings of play, despite 6 other D-Backs putting the ball in play, only to be put out at first. (Johnson, Mercer, Stevens, Wallace, Pettit, and Box)
But an outstanding team pitching performance allowed the late offensive surge to make the difference.
Stevens started the game striking out 8 of the first 9, and contributing in the 1-3 groundout on the other batter he faced, through the first three innings. He struck out one more in the 4th, but Pettit inherited a 2-1 deficit in the 5th. The middle reliever was stellar as well, striking out the first 6 batters he faced.
The Dorchester bats got rolling in the 4th when Arnold and Johnson went back to back with singles to start the inning. Arnold would later score when Richardson put the ball in play.
McMillan was a homer shy of the cycle on the evening, while Zeleznik, Stevens(2), Pettit, and Tubman all singled as well.
But it was Box who earned player of the game honours for full-evening focus, consistent coverage in the infield and outfield, and for a two-hit evening, including a deep double to left field.
The boys play North London (12:30pm) and Cambridge (7:15pm) Saturday!
